LeadUP! Expensive Sentences
In this 2017 (audio) podcast, Dr. Kathryn Bingham and Jack Quarles discuss his book, Expensive Sentences: Debunking the Common Myths That Derail Decisions & Sabotage Success. Quarles’ book enables readers to identify “expensive sentences” and engage in questioning that surfaces cognitive bias that may inhibit critical thinking and decision-making in life and work. Listen here.
In the conversation, Quarles shares how we often hear phrases reflecting conventional wisdom, which may be a trap for optimizing strategies and decisions. He likens the related assumptions to “myths” and groups these into three categories:
- Stuck Myths
- Special Myths
- Scarce Myths
As Quarles debunks these myths, he shows companies and individuals that they do not have to be confined by their past in order to make changes and follow new opportunities in the future. Sometimes expensive sentences hold some measure of current or past truth that keeps the assumptions in circulation for people to draw upon. One simple way to open conversation and thinking involves acknowledging potential truths in statements, and then asking the questions:
- Why is it true?
- When is it true?
- What if it’s not true?
